You have finally decided to take the plunge and buy your first home. Moving into your new home is a big life change. There are still things to do after you sign the papers saying the home is yours. We came up with a list that every new homeowner should check off to get you settled.
- Do a walk through. Familiarize yourself with the layout of your new home. Check all of your appliances, fixtures and fittings left in the house to make sure they are in working order. Find your circuit breaker and water shut off valve so if repairs are needed you know where they are and you can turn them off.
- Change the locks. The papers are signed and you get the keys from the old owners. What about the extra keys they made for family and friends? You will never know who still has access to your home, so arrange for a locksmith to update the locks and you can sleep easy.
- Clean your new home. Start off on the right foot with a clean slate. Do a deep clean of all appliances, bathrooms and details like moldings and built-ins before you unpack all of your things. If you plan on painting do it now, before all of your furniture is set.
- Sort out your utilities. Contact your cable, phone, electric and gas company to make sure that all the utilities are transferred to your name. Most utility providers need someone to be home to set up the service. Make appointments in advance and plan on having someone there during that time.
- Update your address. You should notify all of the companies you deal with of your new address so bills, checks, catalogs and any other snail mail reaches you. You should start with bank accounts, credit card companies, insurance providers and professional memberships.
- Update your car registration and driver’s license. Did you move to a new state? If so, you will need to change your registration and license. If you move within the same state, you will need to update your information with your new address.
- Forward your mail. Set up mail forwarding at the post office, so you don’t miss anything important. You can do this before you move as well.
- Implement safety. Post a list of emergency numbers in a space where everyone can see it. Unpack the first aid kit and fire extinguisher and make sure everyone knows where it is kept. Have a meeting within the first couple of weeks to go over your emergency exit plan for the new home. Make sure everyone knows it.
