With the events of the last several months, managing stress and anxiety may be an essential part of your life at the moment. One way you can keep your stress levels low is to make sure you remain active.
Does this sound familiar? You want to be in better shape but getting started on a new workout plan can often be the hardest part. You start out motivated and you can envision a new and healthier tomorrow, but you only quit early into your new routine.
We have all been there. The reason for a sudden lack of motivation is surprisingly simple: the tough part of starting a workout routine isn’t the physical effort, but the difficult part of starting the new routine itself.
Keep in mind that an exercise routine is a habit, and starting a new habit is almost always a mental activity, not a physical one. You are training your brain to expect the physical exertion of lifting weights, running, yoga or whatever else you have decided to do.
Here are a few tips to help you get moving:
- Set a simple goal – It is easy to go overboard, so set some realistic goals to work toward.
- Create “pre-habits” – Putting on your gym clothes, is easy, but remind your brain that what comes next is your workout.
- Take it slow – Listen to your body and let it guide you. It can be easy to overdo it in the beginning, but an effective exercise routine is one that you can continue for the rest of your life.
- Celebrate the start – Starting your workout is the victory, so celebrate it!
Using these tips to build a habit of fitness, will have you feeling better than ever.
